Community Screening of Just a Farmer and Mental Health Awareness

The two-day community screening of Just a Farmer in Dareton and Coomealla was highly effective in fostering connection, raising mental health awareness and creating a safe, welcoming space for conversations around wellbeing.

Attendance exceeded expectations with 150 people participating including several farming families who travelled in from the Darling region and surrounding stations.

"The support from Ski for Life truly lifted the weight off our shoulders. Their contribution made it possible for us to deliver a two-day event that was completely free for our community — something we’re incredibly proud of and deeply grateful for. What made Ski for Life’s partnership so special was how genuinely they understood rural life. They get it — they live it, they appreciate it, and they bring that same compassion and understanding into the communities they support. From the very beginning, they could see our vision clearly and were open, accommodating, and kind in every conversation. Their trust and belief in our project helped us bring people together in a way that celebrated connection, wellbeing, and shared purpose across our region.

What a great organisation — Ski for Life is truly making waves of impact across rural communities".

“On behalf of the William Creek Progress Association, I would like to thank you and the Ski for Life team for your offer to bring “Are You Bogged Mate” ‘s Mary O’Brien up to our small remote community to promote awareness about men’s mental health .Mary is an amazing speaker, very down to earth, and our community and the visiting tourists in the area, both you and old, really enjoyed and certainly took in what she had to say.

THANK YOU SKI FOR LIFE

Gary Purdie, in conjunction with Lameroo Forward would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ski for Life for their generous grant supporting the screening of Just a Farmer at the Lameroo Town Hall on July 4th.

This powerful and moving event attended by nearly 100 community members shone a light on the real-life struggles and strength of those living and working in rural areas.

The evening kicked off with a warm meal from the Lameroo Lions Club setting the tone for a night of connection and conversation.

Just a Farmer, created and performed by Lelia McDougall was raw, honest and deeply emotional sparking real conversations around the often-unseen challenges of rural life.

The post-screening panel featured Lelia herself, alongside The Hon.

Nicola Centofanti MP, Stevi Howdle (Farm Safe Australia), and local health professional Desiree Parkhurst, offering valuable insights into mental health in the regions.

This incredible night wouldn’t have been possible without the support of:

Lameroo Hotel Motel Board, South Mallee District Council, Skylight Mental Health, Walter Agencies, McPiggery, Nutrien Byrne Ag Lameroo & Karoonda, Lameroo Country Kitchen, StandBy Support After Suicide and Farmsafe Australia.

Thanks to Ski for Life’s support this event became more than just a film night it became a safe space for sharing, support and community connection!
